Give Yourself the Gift of Reflection

Prologue

Ancient texts promote reflective living. The reasons why are crystal clear. Since time immemorial, individuals were unlikely to sort through and acknowledge the underpinnings of their life journeys absent self examination.  Besides, we are tempted to look outside of ourselves to blame and judge rather than to excavate the interior of our own lives to unveil the power within.

The Joy in My Work

I benefit greatly and become much better in every facet of my life that I take the time to reflect. In my work in reflectivity (Gallavan and Webster-Smith, 2010; Gallavan and Webster-Smith, 2009; Webster-Smith, 2010; Webster-Smith, 2008), I offer emerging school leaders, teacher-leaders, and the general populace rich opportunities for self understanding. My work encourages individuals to exhume not only “what” they believe but “why” they believe. Professionals are persuaded to reflect upon their practice while laypeople are inspired to consider their routines. In either case, individuals become introspective about what they are doing (commission) and why, as well as what they are not doing (omission) and why. Understanding the whys and wherefores of life can empower us to shut the door on ineffective ways of living in addition to those beliefs we have adopted but are not necessarily our own. I am fully persuaded that reflective living is critical to becoming our best selves. For these and comparable reasons, I consider it simply a joy to help others to excavate their inner worlds so they can rise up to become their best selves.
